(this is a draft of our new web site)

Born over 20 years ago as a vehicle for Kathy’s extracurricular earnings after her stint as NASA’s chief scientist, Docere has grown as we’ve both expanded the ways in which we’ve chosen to share what we’ve learned in our varied careers and from the life we’ve lived while pursuing them.  With a combined 74 years in academia, we’ve been expected to shape many young minds.  The joy of teaching did not stop with retirement for us, and we are pleased to have this extended opportunity to keep doing that in many different ways. We didn’t have to write us a new motto, as Harold Ramus and pals gave us one in their great ’78 movie

Meet the team

Kathryn Irene Clark, M.S., Ph.D.                         Robert William Ike, M.S., M.D.                                                                        co-CEO (since 2004) co-CEO (since 2020)

More about us

While Dr. Clark managed to get out from under the thumb of U of M for a few years by escaping to D.C. and NASA, Dr. Ike did it their way from start to finish, including recording every academic activity on a C.V.  That CV can be accessed above along with several other profiles.  Dr. Clark is assembling her record of the many talks she has given around the world, to be added as this page is refined.  Meanwhile, here’s her biographic sketch:

Dr. Kathryn Clark has recently retired as adjunct associate research scientist in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan and is retired from the Department of Movement Science in the School of Kinesiology.    Although born in Ohio (not her fault), she bleeds maize & blue. She has received 5 advanced degrees from the University of Michigan; masters’ degrees in Kinesiology and Lunar Geology, a Ph.D. in Kinesiology, and post-doctoral degrees in Cell & Developmental Biology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

She is the former International Space Station Senior Scientist where she strived to coordinate the scientists from the 16 contributing countries and to make the engineers who were building the ISS understand the needs of the science community.

She later served as the Chief Scientist for Human Spaceflight, where she spent most of the time planning missions to Mars and making use of the ISS to “iron out the wrinkles” in the physiological problems associated with long term space flight.

While at NASA, Dr. Clark’s adventures included giving a lecture from the North Pole, addressing the United Nations in Vienna, and landing an F-18 on an aircraft carrier.

Fearing boredom in retirement, Dr. Clark has become a children’s book author, using the pen name Auntie KC.  Written for 4–9-year-olds, the current 10 book series is about the solar system. Four of these books have been published.  The books are ridiculous, silly, and funny.  But the science behind them and on the associated web site (auntiekc.com) is not. She is always on the look-out for opportunities to get into schools, churches, and community organizations to read her books and recruit the next generation of scientists, engineers, and astronauts.

Dr. Ike retired from the med school in 2019 after foolin’ ’em for 44 years. With only 8 years away since coming here in 1970, he’s becoming ever more the Ann Arborite. Since retiring, he’s kept WordPress (his blog), Jeff Bezos, and medical editors busy.

I retired from the Rheumatology division of Michigan Medicine end of June '19 after 36 years there. Upon hitting Ann Arbor for the second time (I went to school here) it took me almost 8 months to meet Kathy, 17 months to buy her a house (on Harbal, where we still live), and 37 months to marry her. Kids never came, but we've been blessed with a crowd of colleagues, friends, neighbors and family that continues to grow. Lots of them are going to show up in this log eventually. Stay tuned.
